On Sunday August 27, Spinsters of San Francisco began their 88th fundraising year with their annual New Member Tea. Donned in beautiful dresses, hats and fascinators, new members and Spinster leadership convened at the San Francisco Fairmont Crown Room to celebrate the next chapter of the organization’s history.

New Member Tea is a beloved tradition of Spinsters of San Francisco. As the organization goes on hiatus during July and most of August, the event serves as a reunion for both returning members, with stories from the summer, and new members, excited to see friends from recruitment. With the Crown Room’s majestic panoramic views of San Francisco, members are reminded of the beautiful city that brings them together. Upon reflecting on the event, Membership Signature Events Co-Chair Andrea Thomas noted: “New Member Tea sets the stage for the new year… it is a small and intimate environment to get to know each other”.

The 2017-2018 Spinsters Board of Directors gave a heartfelt welcome to new members, shared overviews of their time in the organization and gave advice on how to be an impactful member. Sentiments were led by President Eve Denton, who illustrated that “ our members are what make our organization” and advised new members to take advantage of the potential for new friendships: “ Say yes to every brunch invite… the more you put in, the more you will get out.”  During her introduction, Vice President Xanadu Bruggers told new members what she loves most about Spinsters: “ We are a place of inclusion and acceptance. It’s a big family”.

After opening remarks, new members were officially welcomed into Spinsters family by selecting a committee to join for the upcoming year. Committees are small groups where new members provide impact to one facet of the organization, ranging from organizing our volunteering efforts to coordinating our black tie fundraisers. Co-Chairs, the leaders of each committee, spoke enthusiastically about their projects for the upcoming year and how new members could support those efforts. New Members were also introduced to Spinsters of San Francisco’s partner organizations such as: 2017-2018 Charity Partner KEEN SF, the Bachelors of San Francisco and The San Francisco Guardsmen.

As Tea came to a close, spirits were high.  New members, like Kenzi Comstock, expressed thrill about what was to come: “ I am excited about being in Spinsters because it gives me an opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals who are interested in getting to know others and volunteering”.

Spinsters New Member Tea captured that new and returning members were ready to hit the ground running, make new friends, and provide impact to their community.

We are a place of inclusion and acceptance. It's a big family.
