As a social nonprofit, volunteering and fundraising are at the core of Spinsters.

Spinsters volunteer more than 900 hours a year at nonprofits throughout the Bay Area. To deepen our engagement with local nonprofits, each year our members select an organization to support through volunteer service and charitable donations.

Spinsters of San Francisco first began fundraising in 1957 to support Travelers Aid. In 1970 the group decided for the first time to give the proceeds of their Annual Ball to a charity chosen by the members. By the late 1970s, the members separated the Annual Ball into two events: the Annual Ball and the Charity Ball, which has now grown into several Charity Events. All proceeds from our Charity Events benefit the Spinsters of San Francisco’s selected nonprofit partner. The partner is chosen by a vote of the entire membership at the last general meeting of the year in June.

Spinsters of San Francisco is proud to announce our new nonprofit partner, La Cocina!

Spinsters is delighted to partner with La Cocina this year to work with inspiring local food entrepreneurs. La Cocina is a 501(c)3 nonprofit and best-in-class business incubator program that works with women, primarily immigrant women and women of color, to lower barriers to entry into the food industry for talented working class entrepreneurs. As these entrepreneurs formalize and grow their businesses, La Cocina partners with them by providing affordable commercial kitchen space, industry-specific technical assistance and access to market opportunities. Their vision is that entrepreneurs gain financial security by doing what they love to do, creating an innovative, vibrant and inclusive economic landscape.

Spinsters cannot wait to volunteer at La Cocina’s upcoming Street Food Festival! Tickets are only $6 and come with the chance to get your fill of over 30 local delicious chefs.

Spinsters of SF can elect to renew sponsorship with a sponsored charity two times for a total of three years. Please see the Charity Application Packet regarding our charity selection process as well as an application to be considered. Applications for the 2018-2019 year are due March 9, 2018. Past selected organizations have ranged broadly in community service missions. From assisting the homeless to mentoring at-risk youth, Spinsters of San Francisco have supported a variety of service programs targeted to Bay Area needs.

While we dedicate our fundraising efforts to one charity partner organization per year, we are interested in participating in other local charity events. If you have an opportunity you’d like us to share with our group, please complete an application for one-time volunteers!

We regret that we cannot guarantee participation with every opportunity. However, we will do our best to communicate charity outreach opportunities to our members, with details on how they can get involved.
