Spinsters of San Francisco 2014-2015 Board of Directors
The Board of Directors of Spinsters of San Francisco acts as the executive leadership group, overseeing all events, activities, and interactions of the organization between our chosen charity and the San Francisco community. Please join the Board of Directors in our excitement as we celebrate 85 fabulous years of Spinsters of San Francisco!
President Michelle Bertino grew up in the great state of Texas. As a lover of traditions and college football, she eagerly headed off to Texas A&M University where she majored in Business with a focus in Accounting and International Studies. Michelle quickly got the travel bug and spent one summer in a 'semester at sea' study abroad program eating, drinking, and dancing throughout Europe. While at Texas A&M, she was the Social Chair and on the Executive Board as Vice President of Programming for Delta Zeta.
Even though everything is bigger and better in Texas, Michelle couldn't resist the urge to live in the Big Apple. After four years and a Masters degree from New York University, she became infatuated with San Francisco and quickly made the cross-country move. After working at a tech startup and joining Spinsters of San Francisco, Michelle couldn't imagine life anywhere else!
Michelle's favorite Spinsters memories are too many to count, but she does have an affinity for the holidays. Between the smell of Christmas trees at Guardsmen Tree Lot and getting glammed up for Holiday Ball, there's no way you won't find her floating on cloud nine. After leadership positions as Secretary, Charity Party Co-Chair and Public Relations Co-Chair, Michelle is honored to serve on the Board of Directors as President and looks forward to a fabulous 85th year.
Vice President Elizabeth Sgarrella
Elizabeth grew up in beautiful Marin County but traveled south to attend Whittier College where she studied political science. True to form, Elizabeth immersed herself in all that Whittier had to offer and served as Pledge Mistress, Treasurer and Social Chair for the Athenian Society.
A genuine San Francisco community member, Elizabeth also dedicates her time to Encore. When not giving back to the community and putting on unforgettable events for these organizations, Elizabeth can be found enjoying a few of her many hobbies, including hiking, yoga, running, reading and traveling. A portrait of Elizabeth wouldn’t be complete without mention of her adorable poodle that is always by her side – what a personality!
As we can all attest, Elizabeth is the hostess with the mostess. Whether putting on a fabulous Patrons Reception, as she did during her first year in Spinsters and as the Co-Chair last year, or hosting a Thanksgiving potluck at her home, every detail is impeccable! Elizabeth has a passion for all of the glamorous and philanthropic Spinsters events, and counts Patrons, Annual Ball and Charity Parties amongst her favorite (though there are just too many to count!). She will bring an added touch of glitz and glam this year while overseeing our many wonderful events!
Miss Spinster Julia is a Bay Area native. She traveled south and attended the University of Southern California for four glorious – and sunny – years before returning to the part of the state she will always call “home.” Despite her love for the Bay, her football allegiances have always been with the Trojans (even when surrounded by the masses of Cal and Stanford fans!). While not enjoying Spinsters events or traveling back to LA to cheer on her alma mater, Julia can be found exploring local hiking trails, brunching with friends, baking tasty treats, checking out museums or taking in a healthy dose of reality TV!
Julia has always had a passion for giving back to the community alongside other like-minded ladies. From involvement in her college sorority Alpha Delta Pi and other USC service organizations, Julia found her perfect fit with Spinsters of San Francisco. Charity events are where Julia’s heart lies, but she will never miss an opportunity to put on a new ball gown or outfit and enjoy a celebration with her Spinnies. Annual Ball and Fleet or Flight make the cut among her many favorite annual events.
Julia is a PR industry gal and served as Public Relations Co-Chair last year. With a knack for communication and details, she is thrilled to use these skills, and a blend of creativity and sparkle, to bring you exciting updates on Spinsters happenings every week! Keep your eye on your inbox, as this will be our most fun-filled year yet!
While Nina hails from a small town in western New York and has moved around quite a bit, her heart has always been in San Francisco. She first moved to the Bay Area to attend Stanford University where she promptly fell in love with sunny California. An avid explorer, Nina studied abroad in England and traveled across Europe experiencing some amazing adventures. She then landed back in New York in the Big Apple! Though Nina called NYC home for six years, she knew she would return to the Bay and has lived here and been a member of Spinsters for almost three years.
During her time in Spinsters, Nina served on the Alumnae Committee and acted as the Membership Events Co-Chair. A true membership events enthusiast, Nina’s favorite Spinsters event is Wine Tour. She loves the annual opportunity to take a relaxing day trip out of the city and enjoy some quality time with her fellow Spinnies. Outside of Spinsters, her passions include playing tennis, cheering on her Stanford Cardinal, trying out new restaurants in SF, and picnicking in the park. Nina is an outdoor enthusiast and will always jump at the chance to head to Dolores Park, one of the nearby national parks, or wine country.
Nina is the ultimate financier! She studied economics and psychology while at Stanford and now works in the finance industry. But aside from an affinity for crunching the numbers, Nina also brings a warm, approachable personality and an innovative spirit to the position of Treasurer and will make our 85th year truly unforgettable!
Priya is the ultimate globe totter! A cultural and linguistic aficionado, she has lived in more than 12 locations, including Nigeria, Singapore, Hong Kong, Barcelona, Moscow, Berlin, India, Egypt, Malaysia, Dubai and Tokyo, but has called the Bay Area home for the past 13 years. What’s more, Priya picked up eight languages throughout her travels! After sinking her roots in, she did not want to stray far! Priya attended UC Berkeley where she was equally as active, double majoring in business administration and economics, minoring in mathematics and showing off her Beyonce-like dance moves as part of the hip hop team (be sure to hit the dance floor with Priya at one of our charity parties!).
With a passion for the friendship and the bonds that make Spinsters so special, last year Priya served as the Membership Events Co-Chair, was a member of the Membership Selection Committee and was also on the Membership Events committee during her first year in Spinsters.
If you are ever looking for recommendations on the latest hot spots in SF, Priya is your go-to gal. A food and wine enthusiast, Priya is a Yelp Elite and loves everything from trying out new restaurants to traveling up to Napa for a wine country getaway. Did we mention her favorite Spinsters event is Wine Tour? While not busy checking out the latest food and wine venues in SF, Priya can be found enjoying her other hobbies, including exercising at yoga studios and barre workout spots, volunteering at animal shelters, and binge watching whole seasons of TV shows within a weekend!
With her knowledge and enthusiasm for this beautiful city that we call home, Priya is the expert on creating fun, unforgettable activities to bring together our members and create lasting memories amongst the Spinnies!
Few can call themselves a true San Francisco native. Not only was Summer born in the City by the Bay, she has a rich family history in our beloved hometown. Summer is the great-great-niece of Patricia Tobin, our very own Spinsters founder. To top it off, her parents also instilled Summer’s love for charity and community involvement at a young age: her mother worked for The Auxiliary to the San Francisco Children's Hospital and her father was President of The Bachelors and was Mardi Gras King in 1957.
It’s no wonder that Summer is such a philanthropist herself. For two years running Summer held the position of Charity Outreach Co-Chair and has been a member of our organization for five years in total. With a passion for giving back to our community, Summer is constantly seeking out new charitable organizations and avenues for Spinsters to be involved in the community. One of her highlights was an event that Summer planned with the SPCA and Macy’s to help get cats and dogs adopted in the Macy's Christmas window display. She brings this passion for philanthropy and an abundance of knowledge to the role of Charity Director for the 2014-2015 year.
When not giving her all to charity events, Summer can be found frequenting other Spinnie favorites, such as our Father-Daughter event, which she attends annually with her brother, or cheering in the stands at 49ers and Giants games with her friends and family. Prior to her involved role in the SF community and Spinsters, Summer attended Santa Clara University (third generation Bronco!) majoring in psychology. She is currently finishing up pre-requisites for nursing school in hopes of becoming an emergency flight nurse.
Love her gorgeous and unique name? So do we! Cambria’s namesake is actually the sailboat that her parents met on. She grew up in the beautiful and infamous Laguna Beach among six brothers and sisters. A family girl at heart, Cam didn’t stray far and attended nearby UC Irvine before heading north to settle in San Francisco post-grad. While at Irvine, Cambria put her amazing energy and pizazz that we all know and love into creating a brand new position within her sorority… Spirit Chair! She rallied the troops and cheered on her sports teams with the same enthusiasm she brings to Spinsters every day.
Cambria is the ultimate girl-on-the-go. While not attending Spinsters events, she can be found working away as an account manager at Twitter. In her free time, Cam could be out dancing on a Friday night or checking out the latest restaurants and festivals, but she also tries to enjoy some down time, whether relaxing on a sail boat or trying her hand at arts and crafts (Origami is a favorite stress reliever!).
Cambria is entering her third year in Spinsters and previously led the Patrons Committee as Co-Chair. While she holds Patrons near and dear, Cambria also has a soft spot for the glam, glitz and celebration that we enjoy every year at Annual Ball. She is ecstatic to serve as Committee Director this year and is sure to bring a new level of enthusiasm and fun to the amazing women that make our organization so special.
